Spec Tech Exeter Reviews

Do not use this company. They will keep your glasses and take unauthorised payments from your card. They do not respond to phone calls , make promises they dont keep and should not be dealing with anyone

As my sister had posted some spectacles in November 2023, not heard anything since then, followed up with a Recorded Delivery letter a couple of weeks ago but still no response, I went to Exeter today to see what was going on. Unfortunately the shop was closed, but looking through the glass door and window, I saw a large pile of packages (presumably people's spectacles) which had been posted through the letter box, some supposedly "signed for". It seems that many have been there since the end of last year as one was handwritten, asking for them to be done before "New Year". I have now sent a message to the local council to find out if they know what has happened to Martyn Wills, the owner, as it is rather concerning that nobody appears to have been there for at least 2 months and I am worried about his wellbeing.

Just like so many others I have found to my cost that you cannot contact the owner. No response to e-mail and the phone is always on message system.

Is there any way they can be stopped!!!

I sent my glasses in May and still waiting for them to br returned. I have emailed and phoned and been promised they would be returned. I am going to call in on my way to Newton Abbot in a week or two. I am afraid I could not recommend them.

This company don't do what they say they will do. if he answers the phone they then he can't tell you if the specs have been received. He then said he would call me back, twice but doesn't. Doesn't respond to mobile. No answer on the landline. Getting fed up as need my glasses fixed. Maybe he's better if you go in in person?

As per others. Send glasses. Wait a week. Nothing. Chase via email. No reply. Telephone rings out but then disconects. All the hallmarks of a scam company. BE WARNED

Impressed by the mention of "one day" repair on the website I sent my glasses to Spec Tech last Monday: it's now Tuesday of the following week and I have heard nothing. Not even any acknowledgement that they have received my glasses, which would be a start. Their phone number never answers and there is nowhere to leave a message. I don't even know how much they would be charging if they have got the glasses!

As others have expressed here, the turnaround time for repair and response to communications, isn’t the swiftest, but you can be assured that you’re in good hands overall!

I needed x2 pairs of glasses repaired that were incredibly expensive and thus I wasn’t prepared to just bin, Martin worked his magic and was able to pretty much repair both back to their original state.

I’ve since had a problem with the hinges that were refitted to both and Martin has gladly accepted them back and will hopefully repair again!

Ultimately, I can vouch for Spec-Tech’s standard of repair and customer service, would definitely recommend, and will undoubtedly return in the future when my glasses inevitably break again!

On 24th January 2022 I sent a pair of spectacles to Spectech for repair. After having to email and phone several times, eventually they were repaired. I received them back on 5th February 2022. The owner, Martin, is obviously VERY busy, could do with admin help (emails and phone calls) but definitely a crafstman.
The claim that they always ring you on receipt of glasses was not so in my case.
The claim that they can be repaired and returned within 24 hours again was not so in my case.
I am grateful that they have been repaired, although it cost me £40 (good portion of my pension!)

Still awaiting a reply to voicemail, email and text to speak to someone. Glasses sent for repair 6 weeks ago and heard nothing. Contacting the Trading Standards Office.

I can't comment on quality of repair because my frames haven't been repaired, and i don't when, or if they will get repaired. What i can comment on is the dreadful lack of communication and professionalism. Its a working week since Martyn (Wills) received my frames, and i did manage to get through to him a couple of days ago, when he said he'd call back for a payment but never did, and still hasn't. This after numerous attempts to call him, and again today (Friday now). The landline number has never been answered and a pre-recorded message constantly says the mailbox is full, and more often often than not the mobile number just keeps going to voicemail. I just want my frames back now, but i'm left doubting whether i'll ever see them again, never mind repaired. Dissapointing as i have afew frames needing attention. Thankfully i just sent the one frame as a tester.

I sent my glasses to Spec Tech on 18th July and 6 weeks later (02 Sept) I still haven't received any information from Spec Tech despite repeated phone calls and email messages. The last time I phoned them was about 2 weeks ago only to find that their voice mail box was so full of messages, it was unable to receive any more calls. Poor customer service.

Hopeless. Weeks went by before they even acknowledged receipt of broken specs. Credit card was charged for the repair on 17th Feb - now 5th March and specs not returned. Tried to phone but voice mailbox full. Are they still in business? I know covid has been disruptive but this is ridiculous.

I wish I hadn’t sent my precious variofocals to this man!
I have been alone in Lockdown and shielding for months and can’t get out to the shops. I am 80 years old.
His advert promised a fast service. This is not true.
I am now not seeing clearly and I’m depending on old glasses which are not suitable.
He doesn’t communicate and will no doubt leave me in this state for a long time.
It’s getting dangerous and I am close to tears.

I have used SpecTech two times over the past few years. On both occasions my spectacles were repaired very professionally and continue to function perfectly thereafter. The cost is reasonable - and certainly is reassuring given the rip-off prices for spectacles the one encounters from the well-known High Street shops, often which cannot repair faults.

On the second occasion there was a delay, which, when pursued by phone, was plausibly explained and the repair followed swiftly thereafter.

I shall use this company again shortly.

Like a previous reviewer, I have sent my glasses in for repair (13th July) and have been unable to make any contact since. It says 24 hour turn around but this is nearly a month. The voicemail box is full and no answer on the mobile.

Getting v concerned I have been scammed but do see other reviews so hoping its just a backlog issue.

Please call me/email back asap!

Thanks

I have used SpecTech before and found the service "spectacular" however i sent my glasses an expensive Lindberg pair for repair over two weeks ago and apart from my initial conversation I have been unable to make contact with the owner by telephone; message box now full. I am concerned that SpecTech has taken on too much and things are getting on top. I hope not as SpecTech is a great service usually and the owner very helpful.
I really need my specs back in one piece so if you read this SpecTech I would love to get them back soon or let me know how long?

I have used this company three times previously and have always been extremely satisfied both with price and service. I am about to travel the 50 miles to leave my new prescription, I am very surprised to read some of the negative comments as I have always been exceptionally pleased. I only wish he was closer to me.

Just received repaired glasses from Spec-Tech, I had sat on them and thought repair may not be possible. I am delighted with the result, the frame welding is almost invisible, well done. Would have given five stars but twice they failed to call back.

So Thankful for Spec tech
I have worn glasses since 5 years old and have had poor service
And payed High prices on a practical aid that I need to function.

Its been a joy to Discover Martin and his excellent customer service
And his extra technical effort to meet my prescription.

The chain stores have lost me for ever.

Would highly recommended
Any one to visit and support a local independent.

Can only speak as I find. Took my prescription in on a Monday. Received a call on the Friday to say they were ready for collection. As I couldn't get into Exeter due to a forthcoming holiday they posted them immediately and I received the glasses the next day well packaged.. Two pairs of single vision glasses, one for distance and one for reading £70 plus postage. Well done Spec Tech. Will certainly use them again.

Brilliant repairs - fixed an old pair of that I had been told were beyond saving. Fix was top-notch too, especially as it was an entire hinge replacement - virtually invisible and works as good as new.

Not only that but the price was eyebrow-raisingly good. Far cheaper than I expected.

Not a service for the impatient though, all in took around two and a half, three weeks. Well worth the wait though,

Very pleased with my experience with Spec-Tech. I had one broken frame satisfactorily repaired and new prescription varifocal lenses fitted to another of my frames. The total price and quality of work was very acceptable and all was completed and returned to me by special delivery in less time than a pair of new specs would have taken at a proprietary opticians.

I shall be happy to recommend to family and friends.

Excellent service friendly and efficient. I was told I nothing could be done to my glasses by the original supplier-nose pads very hard and painful. Spec-tech Saved The Day can now wear them all day in complete comfort. Would recommend them without doubt. Thank you Martin.

amazing service from start to finish , I was told by several local opticians my glasses could not be mended as I had snapped them in half ,so I was amazed that spec tech said he could ,not only did he mend them you can not even tell from the front they have ever been broken ,in all took a week and a very reasonable charge so I would highly recommend to anyone to give them a go.

This is really an excellent service! My wife broke her specs - the bridge had snapped off on one side and the specs themselves were bent out of shape -and was totally lost without them as she doesn't have a spare pair. She was unable to drive - and - horror of horrors - she couldn't go shopping! We sent the specs to Martin on the Thursday afternoon and had them back on Saturday morning. The specs are as good as new - and what a fantastic turn-around. Thank you Spec-Tech!

Used this company due to the claims on website of a quick turnaround and the most reasonable price for repair. However, posted my glasses to them via special post and didn't hear anything after a few days. Called them up and was told they will check and call me back, no call back received. I chased them again a few days later and they finally confirmed they received my glasses, and charged £25. They called to say my sunglasses were fixed and will be posted the same day. Had to chase after 1 week and was told they hadn't been posted yet. They did end up sending them back by special post but would not use again as they are not as cheap as they advertise and took over two weeks to get my sunglasses back despit their claims of a quick turnaround.

Amazing work a bit slow but I was not in a hurry. Strikes me it's a one man show -- when I phoned it was always Martin, who answered ; nice chap and am delighted with work he did for me, broken at arm hinge, I cannot now remember which arm and work so good can't detect repair at all.
Thank you very much Martin -- Colin

Well, I wish I had looked for reviews before sending my Ray Ban sunglasses off for repair of a broken bridge. I've had them for over 30 years and really like them.
I sent them off on 4th July and called a few days later to make sure they'd arrived. I was told that there were so many repairs to look through that he would call back. He did call back and told me that they hadn't arrived. So I thought 'Well that's that - I'll have to get another pair'
A couple of weeks later I got a phone call and (you guessed it) the sunglasses were being repaired and I would have them back by the end of the week.
It's now 4th August and I have just called again to see where my sunglasses are. Was told that they have been repaired but he was waiting for the glue to dry (!!) to which I replied that I thought 2 weeks was long enough. His reply was that he didn't realise I was in a hurry!
Apparently I'm going to receive my repaired sunglasses back by the end of this week. We shall see!

After reading the bad reviews I was convinced I wasn't going to get my glasses back although I had paid £25. The man was easy to contact but he seems quite disorganised although pleasant every time I spoke to him.

He told me he had sent them off recorded delivery and I have received them just a week later. The repair looks very good and I am so glad to have them back after wearing some 99p ones.

He does need to look at his reviews and get better organised though.

I wish I had read the reviews before I sent my glasses off. I sent off a pair of glasses ( high level prescription) for repair of a broken arm.... You guessed it! They have not come back. I have not heard from the company. No phone call, nothing. I have e mailed them and still nothing. Even if they would justcall or send them back still broken, I wouldfeel better.

Reading the reviews I am very worried now.

I previously used this service in 2013 and received good quick repair.
(Oh yes here it comes) I dispatched a pair to them early November 2014 and spoke to some person within a couple of days; since then nothing nada zero. Any contact I have tried ie phone or E mail ....No answer. All I know is that the monies have been removed from my credit card.
I suppose a trip to Exeter is called for; if not the might of the credit card company cash back scheme is to be evoked.
