Elizabeth Ann of Exeter Exeter Reviews

I had a wonderful experience in Exeter buying shoes… an extremely helpful lady… I have really awkward feet, but was not made to feel uncomfortable in any way.
The personal opinion was SO helpful, and I don’t go anywhere else to buy these one off special shoes - Thank you

Absolutely beautiful footwear. Bought two pairs of gorgeous boots yesterday- stylish and comfortable. Great independent store.

I am looking for some particular boots and was looking for a website for this shoe shop and then came across this rating site. Looking through the reviews out of interest I saw the highly differing reviews and thought I should add mine - as both good and bad reviews are entirely born out by my experience. A few years ago I went into the shop wanting some flat long boots. The lady was wonderful - she was definitely the proprietor (she said so). Attentive, took time, showed me everything, made sure they fitted properly etc. I bought two pairs in the sale and she gave me an extra discount for the two. I have been very pleased with the boots since. CONTRAST a visit a few months later when I suggested that my mother-in-law popped in to see if they had something she was looking for. She has very narrow size 6-7 feet and I asked the lady - definitely the same lady proprietor by the way - about this. She was rude and dismissive. Asserted that my mother-in-law was not above a size 5 and did not have particularly long or narrow feet - she could see by looking she said and refused to measure her! Needless to say the size 5 was way too small as obviously one does know one's own feet for heaven's sake. My mother-in-law was offended by her manner and we came away as fast as we could, feeling bruised by the experience. I was embarrassed as I had recommended her - I could not understand the difference between our two visits. Reading the reviews has reminded me of this - I will not go there again in principle, even though I do like support shops like this - she does not deserve any business. I suppose she has some sort of personality problem - who knows?!

I love this independent shoe shop as it always has fabulous handmade shoes and boots.  I’ve been buying my shoes and boots here for years and have always welcomed the helpful, enthusiastic and professional advice from Angela the proprietor.   Having small feet (35/ small 3) can be a problem in other shops but, throughout my countless visits to the shop, I can usually find at least one pair that are just what I want.

Wonderful shop. Amazing and unique stock. Excellent staff. We need to support these brilliant independent stores or we will lose them!

I never go onto websites and give bad reviews because I think "oh well they were just having a bad day". However having looked at other comments, this seems to not be the case. I went in the shop yesterday and have never met anyone so rude or insulting in my life. What a dreadful woman .

What a rude person and my wife and I cannot understand the change from last time we were in the shop which was 4 star? Will not give the details but she cannot behave like this.
Simply do not visit the shop.

This shop breaches consumer protection and trading laws. It should be investigated and closed now. Refunds refused even when faulty goods have been returned with 30 days.

Never go to the shop of you have a pram/pushchair. Told the shop is too small, even though there was room and there was no-one in the shop. Having experienced the extremely rude Shopkeeper I can understand why the shop was empty. In the past have bought shoes from here and was there with my daughter and grandson. We left and had a wonderful experience 2 doors down, where we bought beautiful and very comfortable boots.
Sorry but this shoe shop will never have my custom again.

Shocking! Great quality shoes, but very bad customer service. You have to go in the shop to experience what I mean. Like others have said, the staff are very rude. Buying a pair of shoes is very hard, and have to be comfortable. Not in the eyes of this shop.... they will sell you a pair of shoes, even if they don't fit properly.
If you were looking for a specific colour and you asked if they had it if it was not on the shop floor, they would say, "why would I have that colour, when this colour is fine". Other words would be they go with anything, they suit you etc etc. They make you feel very small and in the wrong if you challenge them or ask a simple question.
A friend of mine who was overweight, needed wide fitting and a larger size. She was horrified with the way she was treated. Another was pressurised to buy three pairs of shoes, which she has not worn. The return policy is totally made up with how she feels. No-one should not be treated in this way!

What a find.

From the outside this looks like a small shoe shop but once inside you will find an extensive range of boots and shoes.

There are many different Styles and colours on display. The lady who served us I believe is the owner and could not be more helpful. We had so many sizes and styles out to try on and with no pressure to buy. I do not believe you would get this level of service in a chain store. There were 4 of us shopping and we each managed to come out with a purchase and we will be going back.

Lovely shoes but really unhelpful shop owner. I recently bought shoes for a wedding but when I tried them on at home they hurt my damaged knee. I returned to the shop requesting I change the unworn shoes for a more suitable lower heeled pair. Because it was over 2weeks she adamantly refused to exchange them stating she could not do so because she is an independent retailer. I would suggest if she wishes to remain open as an independent retailer she needs to be more customer focused, a bit of flexibility and help goes a long way. I certainly won’t be shopping there again which is a real shame as I would like to support small local businesses.

What a wonderful Shoe Shop! I have visited it many times over a number of years and have always found the wonderful collection of shoes and boots (for any number of different occasions) a total delight! Angela is always very professional and friendly, and her advice and recommendations are most helpful. She goes out of her way to find what I might be looking for. I live in North Devon, but if I need the 'right' pair of shoes, I know I shall find them at Elizabeth Ann's. Thank you so very much!

(Having read a less than favourable review, I do wonder whether the author was writing about a different shop!)

Oh dear oh dear what an awful woman I shall not be returning to this shop. I have never been treated with such disdain in my entire life. She really could not be bothered to assist my elderly aunt, and was rude to another customer while we were in the shop.

I have since spoken to friends and read other feedback and it seems that we are not alone in our experiences at Elizabeth Ann Shoes!

Yesterday, I bought a pair of shoes from Elizabeth Ann....but not before I had tried on about seven pairs! The lady was so helpful and patient despite my indecisiveness. Her service was amazing - she would bring me the pair I'd asked to try on, but also several others similar that she thought I may like. She made a mental note of my size, the colour of the sample material I was clutching, and the occasion I was buying for, even though I left the shop and returned three times during the day before buying! She was so professional, yet friendly and the pair of shoes I eventually bought were picked out by her and couldn't be more perfect in fit, comfort, colour and suitability. The shop has a real feeling of class and many of the price tags are to match; however there are also some affordable shoes and some brilliant sale prices. Next time I want to buy some quality shoes, with an amazing choice of styles and colours, and receive excellent service, I won't be going anywhere else!

I come to this shop like a homing pigeon and have always received the best possible attention. Nothing seems to be too much trouble for Angela as she will do everything she possibly can for you, whether it be browsing or making a purchase.

I cannot recommend this shop highly enough.

Reading such widely conflicting reviews it would appear that there are two, completely different, people in front of house. One not only knows the value of good customer service but is aware of the "Sale of Goods Act" to which all retail outlets and their sales are subject, particularly vis-à-vis refunds/returns etc. The other comes across as either ignorant or arrogantly disdainful of the above act, overbearing and blissfully uncaring about the damage that this attitude will inevitably and irretrievably inflict upon her business. It must have been the latter who tried to persuade my daughter to buy a very expensive pair of boots, one of which had a nail sticking out through the heel!

I have shopped here many times over the last 10 years and always been well assisted. I regularly look elsewhere but as usual when I popped in on a visit to Exeter I was delighted to find 2 pairs of boots that were exactly what I wanted! Good quality and my purchases have always lasted well, great variety of styles, colours and heels.
I have slightly narrow feet so the Italian and Spanish styles always come up tops rather than what seem like wellies on the high street. I was also updated on styles that were coming in for spring and summer that I would probably like and would fit well. I will be back and looking forward to my next visit.

I bought a £90 pair of Van Dal shoes from Elizabeth Ann back in December '14 and couldn't have been happier at having found a pair of shoes that actually fit my short, fat feet!
But after about 6months, and only having worn them three times, the lining started coming away from the shoe.

Long story short, the owner of Elizabeth Ann was hugely apologetic and not only gave me a full refund but also gave me the same shoes in a different colour. FREE!
For saying that it was a manufactures fault, not the shops, I think that was a nice gesture on their part.

I visited the shop yesterday, I had already tried 7 or 8 shops, I was looking for a pair of shojes to wear to my Son's wedding. What a fantastic shop,
The owner and her assistant were so helpful, I left the shop having bought two pairs, and felt over the moon, one very happy bunny!

I bought a pair of shoes and paid £120 for them. After wearing 2/3 times the 'decoration/tassel' on the front was hanging off. I took them back to be told immediately "I don't do refunds" and for the owner to then tuck the tassel through another and say it was fixed! When I then shook the shoe and it fell out again she kept trying to poke the loose tassel in. She then offered to take them to the cobblers to be fixed and for me to go back another day (50 mile round trip) to collect them. I asked if she would send them back and was told no. The assistant (who was more helpful) then tried to fix it and suggested I sew the offending tassel to keep it in place as by now the owner had walked off. The assistant did seem slightly embarrassed when I pointed out I should not be having to sew up £120 shoes and had to give up at this point. Dreadful service and attitude and have now just seen two further google reviews of the same ilk. Wish I had know before spending £200 in the shop!!

I received an excellent service by the owner of this delightful shoe shop. I have awkward long, thin feet with high arches, but she managed to find the right manufacturer and the style to suit my needs both with winter boots and summer shoes. Thank you so much for your help and I hope the shop has a successful 2015

I went into Elizabeth Ann last week and Angela just about saved my life.
I managed to find two pairs of blue shoes which were exactly what I was looking for. I had thought to buy Van Daal shoes - which Angela stocks - but she pointed out that they are not as good quality as before and saw what my problem was with my feet. She found just what I was looking for.
She took enormous trouble and care with serving me; I recommend her shop to people of my generation in particular (60s to 70s age range).

I called to find out if this shop had a pair of Lisa Kay boots I wanted in my size and as I live near guildford asked if they could post them to me. The staff were so helpfull and asked me to talk to the shop owner in half an hour. On calling back was told the boots could be posted and I received them at lunch time the following day. I would purchase from this shop again. Helpfull friendly prompt service.
